The importance of the emotional well-being of workers in a company

Nowadays, Human Resources experts from the main business sectors recognize that the mood of people within an organization is an extremely important issue, since it is intimately linked to their performance. In the past, employee emotions such as gratitude, satisfaction, and pride were considered “good,” but were not necessarily essential in business life.  However, the professionals of Human Resources are beginning to realize that the emotions and mood of workers is a primary issue, since productivity and efficiency in their work depend on it.

According to the Adecco Group’s Chief People Officer of the Future study, talent management leaders connect employee emotions with business interests.  About 68% of these professionals believe that mood is associated with increased productivity.  Likewise, these experts link employee feelings with well-being, creativity, increased loyalty to the organization and reduction of absenteeism.

Several studies during the last decade have proven that emotions are closely involved in almost all the problems that affect the area of Human Resources such as responsibility, effort, absenteeism and undoubtedly productivity.  For this reason, it is very important that all organizations remain aware of the well-being of their workers, since this not only helps them, but also gives benefits to the company.

The pandemic helped companies worldwide to become more aware of the mental health of their employees. However, there are still gaps to take actions that improve or act against this problem. For example, only 51% of professionals working in the Area of Human Resources indicate that they perform some tasks regarding the emotional well-being of their employees. Among the actions they perform, the most common is usually to measure how the staff feels, in addition to providing them with feedback in order to improve their efficiency and results.

Among other strategies in this area, although with a lower proportion of companies that execute them, the following stand out:

  • Provide office spaces to generate the desired emotions
  • Happiness and Wellness Programs
  • Offer social activities
  • Align organizational culture with desired feelings
  • Redesign work to create desired emotions

Therefore, the findings of the study indicated the need to take action in the area of Human Resources, first of all to systematically measure the emotions of employees and implement strategies based on the results.  As well as, to improve the image of the organization before its competitors and in turn encourage them to follow the same path.

Conclusion

The relevance of emotions and the state of mind of employees on the efficiency and fulfillment of the objectives of any company can be evidenced. It must be taken into consideration that when an organization begins to execute activities that favor the emotional well-being of its workers, it will cause not only them to improve their performance, but also that the company can meet the objectives set and be recognized as one that not only cares about obtaining profits, but also about improving its organizational culture.
