Artificial Intelligence (AI) is moving from being just a tool to becoming a strategic business partner. Faced with this transformation, leaders must prepare for a hybrid workforce made up of people and AI agents, according to Microsoft WorkLab in its annual Workplace Trends Index 2025 Report. This report highlights the emergence of so-called “frontier companies,” organizations that combine human and artificial intelligence to operate with agility, scale rapidly, and generate greater value.
The study, which compiles the opinions of 31,000 workers in 31 countries, projects that all organizations will evolve toward this frontier company model over the next two to five years. In this context, 82% of business leaders say they will rethink key aspects of their strategy and operations this year, while 81% expect to moderately integrate AI agents into their strategies within 12 to 18 months.
AI is seen as a key tool for addressing business challenges, such as economic changes and new consumer and shareholder demands. However, while 53% of leaders believe productivity needs to increase, 80% of employees report lacking time due to frequent interruptions, such as meetings and emails, which can add up to 275 daily distractions.
Faced with this reality, the incorporation of AI agents can significantly improve efficiency and enhance the skills of human talent. 55% of workers in frontier companies say that AI allows them to expand their roles and perform more meaningful work.
The transition to a frontier company involves three phases. In the first, AI acts as an assistant, automating repetitive tasks. In the second, it is integrated as a “digital colleague,” assuming responsibilities under human supervision. Finally, in the third phase, humans set the guidelines while AI agents execute entire processes, such as end-to-end logistics management, intervening only in the event of exceptions or managing key relationships.
Microsoft concludes that this change is multifaceted, as each industry and role will evolve differently as technology transforms the business and social landscape.
